Description

You know that feeling when you open the floodgates and suddenly get overwhelmed by everything rushing at you at once? That's exactly why I developed "Input Throttling" - the art of deliberately controlling the flow of information, tasks, and opportunities into your awareness.

Instead of living in constant overwhelm or complete shutdown, Input Throttling lets you regulate exactly how much you're dealing with at any moment. Think of your attention like a high-performance engine - you can throttle up for maximum power when needed, or throttle down to conserve energy and maintain control. When you're in deep work mode, you throttle way down. When you're planning or brainstorming, you gradually open up the throttle to let more ideas flow in.

The key is developing conscious control over this flow rather than being at the mercy of whatever demands your attention. You become the operator of your own mental infrastructure, deciding when to let things in and when to shut them out. It's like having a performance dial for the intensity of your cognitive load.

Application

  • Practice gradually increasing your task load instead of taking on everything at once
  • Use time blocks to control when you allow new inputs (emails, messages, ideas) into your awareness
  • When overwhelmed, consciously throttle down by limiting new inputs until you clear current load
  • Before important work, pre-decide what throttle level you'll operate at
  • Develop triggers that help you recognize when you need to throttle up or down for optimal performance
